The Churchill’s Grove/Lawn Place Community Garden is
well underway, with 26 of the 34 raised beds built and filled. Hat’s
off to Tyler Smith and his crew! The location is on the vacant lot at 995 N. Main St. next to
Franklin Place. The Fridh company has graciously offered the use of the
lot, and also sent a $100 donation for the project. Reese & Reese Law
Firm is allowing us to tap into their water line as well. This vegetable garden is made possible through a grant from
the City of Rockford Human Services Dept., Community Services Block Grant –
ARRA, and the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity. There will be a raised bed of flowers across the front with
the vegetable boxes behind that. Anyone who would like to is welcome to
participate with the care of the garden and also reap the harvest. Any
surplus food will be donated to local food pantries. If the weather holds, we are ready for volunteers to help
rearrange the soil in the current boxes and then begin planting. Here is
a schedule for this weekend: Saturday, May 15 - 10am – 1pm Sunday, May 16 - 10am – 1pm Please bring any garden tools, esp.: spade, hoe or heavy rake, wheel barrow, trowel, fork, gloves. If you know of anyone else who might be interested, feel free to invite them!
