Garbage Collection and Recycling

For the most up-to-date and complete information on garbage- and refuse collection in the City of Rockford, please visit the City's website or call 815-987-5570.
Thursday morning collection

Please note that it is against City Ordinances to put your trash out before Wednesday at 3:00 pm for Thursday morning pickup.  Your neighbors will appreciate it if you observe this policy and also if you retrieve the empty trash containers at your earliest convenience.

Some tips to keep your neighborhood clean:
  • Use a sturdy, lidded trash can so animals do not tear bags open.
  • If using bags, tie them securely.
  • Please return your cans to your garage or shed by Thursday night. This is a common courtesy and will keep cans from getting blown away or damaged. ·

Tires, paint, oil, or other toxic liquids will not be picked up by City collectors.  You must take them to the City's recycling facilities:

- Recycling Drop Off Facilities for Used Engine Oil and Used Tires

Rockford residents can recycle used oil and tires at Fire Station #9  at the corner of N. Rockton Ave. and Halsted Rd., Saturdays 8 a.m. to 11 a.m., excluding holidays. No more than (4) four tires will be accepted per person per day. No other materials will be accepted at this site. To use this facility, you must have a current Rockford City Sticker on your vehicle.

- Recycling Drop Off Facilities for Household Hazardous Waste

Rockford residents can dispose of household hazardous waste at the Household Hazardous Waste Disposal Center at 3333 Kishwaukee St., Saturdays 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Sundays 12 p.m. (noon) to 4 p.m., excluding holidays. Aerosols, corrosives, oxidizers, solvents, oil-based and latex paints, waste oils, pesticides, batteries, fluorescent lamps, and insulin disposal service will be accepted. Radioactive waste, compressed gas, and explosives will not be accepted. The facility is available to all residential parties, regardless of place of residence.

Refrigerators, Air Conditioners·and other appliances containing Freon:
Freon must be removed by a certified technician and tagged as such.  Untagged items will not be picked up. You will receive a notice and can opt to pay $35 to have freon removed. Please remove the door of refrigerator before placing outside.

Waste collectors will in many cases pick up even large items but they will not pick up building materials or construction debris - please call a private hauler to remove such materials or debris.
